Yes, I was there with my big red sign that read "More debt? Print more money?". I got in, one of only 400. I would presume that more than a couple thousand were there by 6:00 PM, and the show didn't start till 7:00PM. And could you believe it? The place was packed with pre-made Obama signs that said "THANK YOU". I didn't see any pre-made signs from the insurance lobby, just simple homemade signs.

Well, they did a good job stacking the deck, but their cards weren't drawn. You received a perforated 2 piece raffle ticket, one to hold on to and one that went into a big wicker basket. If they drew your number, you got to speak. Well, if you stacked the deck, you'd think that you would get "your people" to speak. A majority of the people who got to speak were against the increase in government health care! It really baffled them! Hey, check out Sue Jeffiers , she was taking better notes than me and has an exact count. I 'm sure she will have some great insights on tonight.

If you go to Minnesota Majority they were filming tonight, so follow their website too for some great video.

One thing that did make me chuckle is that after a man expressed his concern about abortion in the proposed legislation, Rep. McCollum commented he had "valid talking points". Not opinion, not a closely held religious belief, but his concern was a "talking point".

Fresch

Oh, Wednesday I was so exited. I received an e-mail from Senator Amy Klobuchar that she wanted ME to be part of her Tele Town Hall!

Dear :_____

As someone who has previously contacted our office to share your thoughts on issues important to you, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to participate in a live statewide healthcare tele-town hall meeting this Sunday, August 23 rd , at 7:00 PM. Along with people like you from across the state, I will be joined by Dr. Denis Cortese, CEO of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and Mary Wakefield, the highest ranking nurse in the federal government. The three of us will discuss the need for health care reform, including ways to make the American health care system more affordable and more stable, and I will answer as many questions as I can from citizens from around the state.

If you would like to participate in this important discussion, the only way to guarantee your involvement is to visit our website at http://klobuchar.senate.gov or click HERE and enter your contact information. Once you’re registered, you’ll get an automated reminder phone call on Friday evening and you’ll be called again on Sunday to be joined to the call. The phone number you provide will be kept private.

If you have any questions, you can call the office toll free at 1-888-224-9043.

I look forward to hearing from you on Sunday.

Sincerely,

Amy Klobuchar
United States Senator

I was really pumped! Maybe all those calls to her Minnesota and Washington offices paid off! I even received my follow up call on Saturday. I was really looking forward to Sunday night.

6:45, 6:50, 7:00, no call, maybe they are just busy, maybe it's running late. Then at 7:15 I received my recorded message from Amy saying she "missed me". How could she have "missed me", I was home since 5 or so. She explained I could listen to a recording of her town hall on her website. If my call was as 7:15, was it over yet? I guess when no one is dissenting, things go pretty fast.

I guess maybe I didn't call her office enough I'll start calling more.

Fresch

The editorial board of the Pioneer Press was trying to make a case for releasing personal data on government employees but failed to come up with an important question.

What would happen if you were a government employee, say a union school teacher, and you happened to be active in the Republican Party? Oh, sure, not a problem if you were a Democrat, but what if you were one of those hated Republicans? What if this information was available to the general public? Or, just government employees, yes, good old civil servants doing what is "best" for Minnesota? Or, say, that government employee was active in Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL), or maybe he/she has a handgun carry permit or some nice high powered and legal firearms?

It seems to me that just as much bad could come out of this possible legislation as good.
The Obama Administration is thinking about loosening economic sanctions with Cuba. Well, at first, this seems awful tempting to U.S. firms thinking that they could sell everything from construction materials, farm goods, to medical goods, and high tech equipment, but the question must be asked "how are they going to pay for it". Then, second, if they are going to sell us stuff, what are they going to sell? Cigars and sugar?

In a Washington Examiner opinion article Paul Mirengoff of PowerlineBlog.com discusses the political angles of getting all the Democrats on the same page for opening relations with Cuba. What needs to asked is some basic questions about the business end of it.

First, Cuba has no money. Imagine that, a socialist country with massive debt, kinda sounds familier doesn't it? They have no money to pay for all the stuff they are going to buy. So, we are going to borrow money to lend it to Cuba so they can buy our stuff? They haven't paid anyone else back, so why us? But then, nothing makes sense with money policy in the Obama Administration.

Second, are they going to sell us cigars? Didn't President Obama just tell us how bad smoking was and we needed to tax the heck out it for SCHIP? Or, they could sell us sugar! I bet the folks in western Minnesota growing sugar beets will love that! Or the sugar cane farmers in Louisiana will love that too! So, we subsidize the cost of producing our own sugar just to have Cuban imports undercut it! How about the corn farmers raising corn for ethanol, sugar works for ethanol too!

So, the opening of relations with Cuba sounds great to the political left who still think it has great things to offer but it is just another liberal looking for a handout.

I don't smoke cigarettes, I can't afford to. I do like an occasional cigar. Nothing beats a Rocky maduro in the back yard with a gin and tonic in an Adirondack chair listening to the final innings of a Twins game after a long hard day. But back to cigarettes.

For years, when I saw folks puffing away outside the entrances of buildings I always offered my opinion whether they wanted it or not. I would say "keep smoking, there's a DFL'er with a spending habit that's addicted to the tax revenue". I would get a scowl or even a F-bomb once in a while. Well, I've got a new line.

The Obama Administration just upped the taxes on cigarettes sixty cents a pack to help pay for the SCHIP Program, which, is supposed to go for paying for children's government health care. We can talk about the SCHIP program some other time, but the purpose of this new tax is, of course, the children.

So, seeing that paying taxes is now patriotic and it's for the children, why not tell smokers this. I usually don't bug the older folk, the world was different in their day but I love to remind the youth of today. They have been indoctrinated of how bad the evil tobacco companies are and how bad for their health it is but they still seem to take up smoking. So......

"Keep smoking, Obama wants socialized medicine", "keep smoking, Obama is counting on you", "oh, good, young taxpayers, keep smoking please" , oh, are the youth of today going to hear it from me.

Fresch

Living in St. Paul I used to see many of the "Happy to pay for a better Minnesota" lawn signs. I presume most of them were at sometime replaced by a Franken or Obama sign, but I do still see a few. These folks wanted to be taxed more so that there would be more government. Some folks were "happy to pay" a little more, while they wanted other folks to pay a lot. Heck, today's world they just want "the rich" to pay more.

Many have said, "why don't these people just write out an additional check to the government" if they are so insistent in paying more.
